Chapter 10

BY THE time the ferry docked, Aiden was wrung out and jittery. He hadn’t planned to dump all over Murphy like that, and now all he wanted to do was go home, curl up on Murphy’s couch, and hope Murphy developed a limited case of amnesia for the last couple hours… or the last couple days, so Aiden could get a do over.

As they joined the line of disembarking cars, he cursed himself for doing everything he’d said he wasn’t going to do. He wasn’t going to spew drama all over Murphy. He wasn’t going to be that immature, bratty, attention-craving drama queen anymore. He had to fix his own problems. Murphy was so supportive now, but he’d get tired of dealing with Aiden’s shit eventually. Everyone did.

“Are you okay?” Murphy asked from the passenger seat as they pulled onto twenty-eight, following the instructions of the GPS.

No. But I’m never okay. That’s the problem.

Frustrated that he couldn’t hide anything from Murphy, Aiden took a calming breath and forced his body to relax.

“I’ll be all right. I’m sorry for all that earlier.”

“Don’t be sorry.” Murphy placed a hand on Aiden’s thigh and gave it a gentle squeeze. “I’m honored you felt you could share that with me.”

When Aiden gave him a disbelieving frown, Murphy chuckled. “Aiden, I told you, feelings are kind of my thing. It’s what I do. It’s who I am. My mother always said I was ‘sensitive’ or ‘gentle’—much to my father’s dismay.” Murphy laughed louder this time. “I honestly never had to come out to my parents because it was blatantly obvious from a young age. I mean I didn’t put on her dresses or makeup or ask to take ballet or anything, but I was always… sensitive.”

Murphy’s smile was contagious, and Aiden relaxed a little more. “Sensitive or not, I don’t want to wear out my welcome in the first week. Adam had the patience of a saint, and he couldn’t deal with me much past the first few months we were together. I think I should pace myself.”

Murphy’s smile faded, and Aiden cursed himself anew for bringing up Adam again.

Am I ever going to have some sort of filter between my brain and my mouth? God, I need to just shut up.

When Murphy withdrew his hand and settled farther into his seat, Aiden would have kicked himself too, if he hadn’t been driving.

“Do you miss him?”

“Who?”

“Adam. You talked about that connection you had, about how you thought it meant forever.”

For once Murphy actually sounded like he was the one that needed reassurance. Aiden had no problem stepping up there.

“No. I mean, yeah, I miss him a little, I guess. He’s a really good guy. He’s stable and dependable. I liked that. I needed that. But those things I liked most about him in the beginning were the things that drove me crazy later on. He was so stubborn, so set in his ways. It was like moving a mountain to get him to come
